O.] 1913:64, Pls. 21-22; Fig. 2 [Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries v. 32 (Doc. 776) (for 1912); ref. 4153] Coyote Creek near Gilroy Hot Springs, Santa Clara County, California, U.S.A. Holotype: USNM 74476. Paratypes: CAS-SU 22492 (100, now 56), 24282 (22); USNM 75335 (75). Type catalog: Böhlke 1953:32 [ref. 12291], Gilbert 1998:161 [ref. 23395]. •Synonym of Hesperoleucus symmetricus (Baird & Girard 1854), but a valid subspecies -- (Gilbert 1998:161 [ref. 23395]). • Possible the same as Lavinia exilicauda Baird & Girard 1854 -- (Nelson et al. 2004:198 [ref. 27807]). •Valid as Hesperoleucus venustus Snyder 1913 -- (Baumsteiger & Moyle 2019:230 [ref. 36443], Page et al. 2023:70 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Hesperoleucus venustus Snyder 1913. Leuciscidae: Laviniinae. Distribution: Western North America: coastal watersheds, largely west of the coastal mountain range, northern California (U.S.A.). Habitat: freshwater.
