Neotype: MZUSP 115087. Syntypes: whereabouts unknown. On p. 39 when continuously paginated. •Questionably a synonym of Mugil trichodon Poey 1875 -- (Thomson 1997:494 [ref. 23428]). •Valid as Mugil brevirostris Miranda Ribeiro 1915 -- (Menezes et al. 2015:3 [ref. 33678] with author as Ribeiro, Marceniuk et al. 2017:41 [ref. 35324] with author as Ribeiro, Neves et al. 2020:[7] [ref. 37442], Neves et al. 2020:[6] 168 [ref. 38248], Caires in Marceniuk et al. 2021:269 [ref. 38945], Koerber et al. 2022:79 [ref. 39235], Carvalho-Filho 2023:200 [ref. 40480]). Current status: Valid as Mugil brevirostris Miranda Ribeiro 1915. Mugilidae. Distribution: Southwestern Atlantic: Amapá south to Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) endemic. IUCN (2023): Not assessed. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
