safgha, Sciaena Fabricius [J. C.] in Niebuhr (ex Forsskål) 1775:53, xii [Descriptiones animalium (Forsskål); ref. 1351] [No locality stated] Red Sea. No types known. Originally listed as Sciaena safgha in the index (p. xii), but as Sciaena sp. with vernacular Arabic name 'Safgha' on p. 53; both are linked together by the species code ‘67’; the name Sciaena safgha (with author as Fabricius) is not available from the text, but would be available by indication (ICZN, Art. 12.2.2) from the index (see Fricke 2008:26 [ref. 29757]). Spelled safga in Lacepède 1802:256 [ref. 4929]. Rarely used senior synonym of Ambassis natalensis Gilchrist & Thompson 1908, which latter name is here retained to preserve the name of prevailing usage. Authorship according to Fricke 2008:26 [ref. 30182]. •Valid as Sciaena safgha Forsskål 1775 -- (Dor 1984:94 [ref. 29757], Goren & Dor 1994:24 [ref. 25356]). •Status uncertain -- (Martin & Heemstra 1988:11 [ref. 21758]). •Synonym of Ambassis natalensis Gilchrist & Thompson 1908 -- (Anderson & Heemstra 2003:205 [ref. 27368], Fricke 2008:26 [ref. 29757]).
