lapidifera, Chromys Castelnau [F. L.] 1855:16, Pl. 12 (fig.1) [Animaux nouveaux or rares v. 2; ref. 766] Falls of the Rio Araguaya [= Araguaia], Brazil. Holotype (unique): MNHN A-8321 (dry). Original genus should have been Chromis. Name spelled lapidifera in text (pp. viii and 16) and index (p. 108); lapidifer in figure caption and list of figures (p. xi). A neotype (BMNH 1970.10.28.58) was designated by Gosse 1971:5 [ref. 7679] but Bauchot et al. 1978:45 [ref. 20862] report that the type is extant; the Code calls for submission to the ICZN for a ruling as to whether the neotype is or is not to be retained. •Valid as Retroculus lapidifer (Castelnau 1855) -- (Gosse 1971:4 [ref. 7679], Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:641 [ref. 27061], Landim et al. 2015:378 [ref. 33850], Koerber et al. 2022:69 [ref. 39235]). Current status: Valid as Retroculus lapidifer (Castelnau 1855). Cichlidae: Cichlinae. Distribution: South America: Amazon River basin (Brazil). Habitat: freshwater.
