polycentra, Tilapia Duméril [A. H. A.] 1861:254 [Archives du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris v. 10 [for 1858]; ref. 1149] Gorée, Senegal. Holotype (unique): MNHN A-9372. Type catalog: Blanc 1962:225 [ref. 20868]. Probably the valid name for the northern West African cichlid species, formerly included in Chromis guineensis. •Questionably a synonym of Tilapia guineensis (Günther 1862) -- (Teugels & Thys van den Audenaerde 1991:490 [ref. 20943], Teugels & Thys van den Audenaerde in Lévêque et al. 1992:758 [ref. 21590]). •Valid as Coptodon polycentra (Duméril 1861) -- (J. Freyhof pers. commun. 2/2020). Current status: Valid as Coptodon polycentra (Duméril 1861). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: From Senegal and Gambia to the north, West Africa. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
