Holotype (unique): ?BMNH 1869.5.14.4. •Valid as Coris frerei Günther 1867 -- (Randall 1994:265 [ref. 21644], Heemstra in Smith & Heemstra 1995:xii [ref. 21953], Randall 1995:276 [ref. 22896], Randall 1999:36 [ref. 24043] but with inserted errata sheet moving to a synonym of formosa, Fricke et al. 2009:85 [ref. 30213], Fricke & Durville 2021:34 [ref. 38902]). •Synonym of Coris formosa (Bennett 1830) -- (Randall 1986:692 [ref. 5706], Parenti & Randall 2000:15 [ref. 24943] with authorship as Playfair & Günther 1867, Golani & Fricke 2018:124 [ref. 36273], Randall & Victor 2022:193 [ref. 39916]). Current status: Synonym of Coris formosa (Bennett 1830). Labridae. Distribution: Red Sea; western Indian Ocean: East Africa and Natal (South Africa), Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Sri Lanka [if valid]. IUCN (2010): Least concern. Habitat: marine.
