siganus, Scarus Forsskål [P. S.] 1775:25 [Descriptiones animalium (Forsskål); ref. 1351] Al-Luhayya, Yemen, Red Sea, or [Basræ] Al-Basrah, Iraq, Persian Gulf, 30°30'N, 47°47'E. Lectotype: ZMUC P6689 (dry skin). Paralectotypes: ZMUC P6690 (dry skin). Originally Scarus siganus; rivulatus; regarded as an alternate name for Scarus [= Siganus] rivulatus Forsskål 1775; later spelled sigana and sigan. See Rüppell 1828-30:44 [ref. 3843] for discussion of the name. Not available from this combination as the author of p. 25 (Fabricius) did not decide how to name the species, rivulatus or siganus (see Fricke 2008:54 [ref. 30182]). Name made available by Bonnaterre 1788:94 [ref. 4940] (see Fricke 2008:54 [ref. 30182]). Lectotype selected by Klausewitz & Nielsen 1965:13 [ref. 20847]; lectotype figured in Klausewitz & Nielsen 1965: Pl. 2 [ref. 20847]. Named Amphacanthus siganus by Rüppell 1829:44, Pl. 11 (fig. 1) [ref. 3843], which is not an independent species description but a reference to Forsskål with different genus assigned. •Synonym of Siganus rivulatus Forsskål & Niebuhr 1775 -- (Woodland 1990:44 [ref. 19220], Golani 2005:58 [ref. 37112], Fricke 2008:54 [ref. 30182], Eagderi et al. 2019:111 [ref. 37020]). Current status: Synonym of Siganus rivulatus Forsskål & Niebuhr 1775. Siganidae. Habitat: brackish, marine.
