argenteus, Hyperprosopon Gibbons [W. P.] 1854:p. 2, col. 3 [Daily Placer Times and Transcript [newspaper] v. 5 (no. 1274); ref. 5207] San Francisco Bay, California, U.S.A. No types known. Originally as Hyperprosopon argenteus, but specific name should have been argenteum. Appeared first in newspaper as above; then in Gibbons 1854:105 [ref. 18929]. •Valid as Holconotus argenteus (Gibbons 1854) -- (Herrera 1896:57 [ref. 39336] with authors as Jordan & Gilbert). •Valid as Hyperprosopon argenteum Gibbons 1854 -- (Tarp 1952:31 [ref. 12250], Eschmeyer & Herald 1983:230 [ref. 9277], McAllister 1990:153 [ref. 14674], Ruiz-Campos et al. 2000:73 [ref. 24940], Nelson et al. 2004:153 [ref. 27807], Love et al. 2005:133 [ref. 37547], Page et al. 2013:158 [ref. 32708], Pietsch & Orr 2015:73 [ref. 34694], Kells et al. 2016:258 [ref. 35888], Longo et al. 2018:595 [ref. 36149], Burton & Lea 2019:80 [ref. 37205], Love et al. 2021:172 [ref. 39279], Page et al. 2023:160 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Hyperprosopon argenteum Gibbons 1854. Embiotocidae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: southern British Columbia (Canada) south to Pacific coast of central Baja California (Mexico), including Guadalupe Island (Mexico). Habitat: marine.
