grunniens, Cottus Linnaeus [C.] 1758:264 [Systema Naturae, Ed. X v. 1; ref. 2787] Several localities. Syntypes: NRM 5633 (1) Lakes of Sweden. Type catalog: Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:225-226 [ref. 20707]. Based in part on Gallus granicus of Willughby 1686: Apppendix Pl. 4 [ref. 30164]. Spelled gruniens in Bloch 1786:157 [ref. 465]. •Synonym of Raniceps raninus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:225-226 [ref. 20707] based on specimen 5633, but they point out that Willughby's account is clearly referable to a toadfish). •See second account of Cottus grunniens and see Hutchins 1981:339 [ref. 6830]. Current status: Synonym of Raniceps raninus (Linnaeus 1758). Ranicipitidae. Habitat: brackish, marine.
