Type catalog: Bauchot et al. 1991:14 [ref. 19958]. Type information: Roberts 1993:43 [ref. 21799]. Kottelat 2013:394 [ref. 32989] indicates that the species epithet is indeclinable. Catalog number of holotype corrected according to Keith & Mennesson 2021:254, erratum [ref. 38375]. •Synonym of Ophiocara porocephala (Valenciennes 1837) -- (Maugé 1986:396 [ref. 6218], Roberts 1993:43 [ref. 21799], Fricke 1999:496 [ref. 24106], Hoese 2006:1607 [ref. 28998]). •Synonym of Ophiocara porocephalum (Valenciennes 1837) -- (Parenti 2021:23 [ref. 38603]). •Valid as Ophiocara ophicephalus (Valenciennes 1837) -- (Kottelat 2013:394 [ref. 32989], Keith & Mennesson 2021:100 [ref. 38375], Keith et al. 2021:104 [ref. 38257], Furuhashi et al. 2023:26 [ref. 40140], Kobayashi & Sato 2023:6 [ref. 40357]). Current status: Valid as Ophiocara ophicephalus (Valenciennes 1837). Eleotridae: Butinae. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Indonesia east to Philippines, north to Taiwan and Japan, south to Northern Territory (Australia), northern Queensland and Lizard Island (Australia), Solomon Islands and New Caledonia. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
