Paratypes: CAS 14037 [ex IU 14037] (1); FMNH 8829-31 (3), 8832 (1, c&s), 8833-40 (8); USNM 78766 (orig. 12, now 11). Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:81 [ref. 12367], Ferraris & Vari 1992:5 [ref. 19771]. •Synonym of Sternopygus aequilabiatus (Humboldt 1805), but a valid subspecies -- (Mago-Leccia 1994:24 [ref. 21320]). •Status uncertain in Sternopygus aequilabiatus species group -- (Hulen et al. 2005:410 [ref. 28485]). •Synonym of Sternopygus aequilabiatus (Humboldt 1805) -- (Albert & Fink 1996:89 [ref. 22024], Crampton et al. 2004:248 [ref. 27652], Ferraris et al. 2017:[34] [ref. 35236]). •Valid as Sternopygus dariensis Meek & Hildebrand 1916 -- (Albert in Reis et al. 2003:489 [ref. 27061], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:67 [ref. 35633]). Current status: Valid as Sternopygus dariensis Meek & Hildebrand 1916. Sternopygidae: Sternopyginae. Distribution: Pacific Slope rivers and Caribbean slope rivers: Colombia, Panama, etc. Habitat: freshwater.
