Holotype: MCNG 8084 [or 8048]. Paratypes: MCNG 928 (1), 1452 (2), 7535 (2), 8094 (4); MHNLS 1508 (2). Type catalog: Lasso et al. 1998:45 [ref. 23639], Ferraris 2007:261 [ref. 29155]. •Valid as Cochliodon taphorni Lilyestrom 1984 -- (Burgess & Finley 1996:169 [ref. 22901], Isbrücker 2001:26 [ref. 25653], Isbrücker 2002:14 [ref. 27178]). •Valid as Hypostomus taphorni (Lilyestrom 1984) -- (Weber & Montoya-Burgos 2002:366 [ref. 26428], Weber in Reis et al. 2003:363 [ref. 27061], Armbruster 2003:52 [ref. 27426], Armbruster 2004:80 [ref. 27644], Ferraris 2007:261 [ref. 29155], Weber et al. 2012:211 [ref. 31999], Zawadzki & Carvalho 2014:51 [ref. 33227], Tencatt et al. 2014:602 [ref. 33520]). Current status: Valid as Hypostomus taphorni (Lilyestrom 1984). Loricariidae: Hypostominae. Distribution: Cuyuni River drainage, Essequibo basin, Venezuela; Rupununi and Takutu River basins, Guyana. Habitat: freshwater.
