palmas, Polypterus Ayres [W. O.] 1850:241, Pl. 6 [Boston Journal of Natural History v. 6 (no. 2) (art. 2); ref. 15932] Cape Palmas, Liberia. Holotype (unique): MCZ [ex BSNH 702] presumed lost. Also appeared in Ayres 1850 (Mar.):181-182 [ref. 20576], p. 241 above dates to Jan. 1850 based on signature dates. A note about the type specimen being received by BSNH appeared on p. 283 in Proc. Bost. Soc. Nat. Hist. v. 3 (1848-1851). •Valid as Polypterus palmas Ayres 1850 -- (Gosse 1984:24 [ref. 6169], Gosse 1988:242 [ref. 6868], Lévêque et al. 1989:113 [ref. 26480], Paugy et al. 1990:332 [ref. 26477], Gosse in Lévêque et al. 1990:85 [ref. 21589], Poll & Gosse 1995:28 [ref. 24781], Hanssens et al. 1995:694 [ref. 22406] with subspecies, Britz 2004:185 [ref. 27800] with subspecies, Schliewen & Schäfer 2006:32 [ref. 28498], Pezold et al. 2016:101 [ref. 34870], Moritz & Britz 2019:[54] [ref. 36886]). Current status: Valid as Polypterus palmas Ayres 1850. Polypteridae. Distribution: West Africa: Upper Guinea region, Senegal to Ivory coast. Habitat: freshwater.
