Hamilton's original, unpublished illustration reproduced by Britz 2019:Pl. 134 [ref. 37532]. •Valid as Notopterus chitala (Hamilton 1822) -- (Vu & Nguyen 1997:26 [ref. 26438], Chen 2002:289 [ref. 26587]). •Valid as Chitala chitala (Hamilton 1822) -- (Mirza 2003:2 [ref. 27265], Ataur Rahman 2003:260 [ref. 31338], Shrestha 2008:50[ref. 29923], Kottelat 2013:31 [ref. 32989], Bleher 2018:66 [ref. 36647], Kosygin et al. 2022:649 [ref. 40736], Chan et al. 2023:133 [ref. 40365], Jamandre 2023:172 [ref. 40455]). Current status: Valid as Chitala chitala (Hamilton 1822). Notopteridae: Notopterinae. Distribution: South Asia: Mahanadi and Ganga-Brahmaputra River basins, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan. Introduced in Hong Kong (China) and the Philippines. Habitat: freshwater.
