Holotype (unique): BMNH 1855.9.19.1392. Also described in Richardson 1844:183, Pl. 7 (fig. 2) [ref. 20295]. •Valid as Stigmatopora argus (Richardson 1840) [sometimes as Stigmatophora] -- (Dawson 1982:578 [ref. 5443], Dawson 1985:176 [ref. 6541], Paxton et al. 1989:430 [ref. 12442], Kuiter 1993:93 [ref. 23929], Gomon et al. 1994:468 [ref. 22532], Kuiter 1997:76 [ref. 25488], Hutchins 2001:27 [ref. 25847], Paxton et al. 2006:842 [ref. 29073], Browne & Smith 2007:5 [ref. 29428], Kuiter 2008:474 [ref. 30642], Kuiter 2009:286 [ref. 30404], Stewart 2015:1060 [ref. 34254], Hamilton et al. 2016:Supplement 3 [ref. 35615], Hoschke et al. 2019:155 [ref. 36626], Short & Trevor-Jones 2020:115 [ref. 37943]). Current status: Valid as Stigmatopora argus (Richardson 1840). Syngnathidae: Syngnathinae. Distribution: Southeastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific: southern Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, central and southern New South Wales (endemic to southern Australia). Habitat: brackish, marine.
