Holotype (unique): USNM 27434. Type catalog: Collette & Knapp 1967:60 [ref. 20211]. •Synonym of Etheostoma whipplei (Girard 1859), but a valid subspecies -- (Lee et al. 1980:709 [ref. 22416], Page 1983:125 [ref. 22189], Retzer et al. 1986:640 [ref. 22453], Robison & Buchanan 1988:444 [ref. 23393]). •Valid as Etheostoma artesiae (Hay 1881) -- (Piller et al. 2001:802 [ref. 25456], Nelson et al. 2004:132 [ref. 27807], Miller & Robison 2004:340 [ref. 27931], Boschung & Mayden 2004:508 [ref. 27995], Page & Burr 2011:575 [ref. 31215], Page et al. 2013:136 [ref. 32708]). Current status: Valid as Etheostoma artesiae (Hay 1881). Percidae: Etheostomatinae. Distribution: Gulf Coast drainages and lower Mississippi River basin, U.S.A. Habitat: freshwater.
