Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:55 [ref. 12367], Springer & Orrell 1996:20 [ref. 22274]. •Synonym of Malacoctenus margaritae (Fowler 1944) -- (Allen & Robertson 1994:232 [ref. 22193]). •Valid as Malacoctenus mexicanus Springer 1959 -- (Patzner et al. 2009:463 [ref. 30396], Hastings & Springer 2009:10 [ref. 31156], Page et al. 2013:169 [ref. 32708], Galván-Villa et al. 2016:149 [ref. 34871], Fourriére et al. 2016:449 [ref. 34668], Del Moral-Flores et al. 2016:611 [ref. 34923] as aff. mexicanus, Love et al. 2021:198 [ref. 39279]). Current status: Valid as Malacoctenus mexicanus Springer 1959. Labrisomidae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Mexico endemic. Habitat: marine.
