Paralectotypes: ?BMNH 1845.6.22.309 (1, stuffed); RMNH 1670-1676 (7, stuffed), 4133a (1), 4133c (1), 4138 (1); ZMB 4155 (1, stuffed). Type catalog: Paepke 2001:330 [ref. 25566]. Lectotype selected by Boeseman 1947:210 [ref. 12876]. •Valid as Stephanolepis oblongus (Temminck & Schlegel 1850) -- (Dor 1984:281 [ref. 29757], Goren & Dor 1994:74 [ref. 25356]). •Hutchins 1997:26 [ref. 23117] was unaware of a lectotype designation for Monacanthus oblongus and his assignment of that species as a synonym of Paramonacanthus japonicus should be reviewed. •Synonym of Paramonacanthus japonicus (Tilesius 1809) -- (Randall et al. 1990:464 [ref. 15987], Lindberg et al. 1997:79 [ref. 23547], Allen et al. 2006:1894 [ref. 29098]). •Valid as Paramonacanthus oblongus (Temminck & Schlegel 1850) -- (Hutchins 1977:56 [ref. 2283], Kyushin et al. 1982:282 [ref. 19754], Carpenter et al. 1997:237 [ref. 23922], Hutchins 2001:48 [ref. 25847], Gill & Hutchins 2002:107 [ref. 26079], Randall 2005:636 [ref. 28239], Larson et al. 2013:234 [ref. 32988], Larson et al. 2013:234 [ref. 32988], Matsuura 2014:12 [ref. 33576], Sonoyama et al. 2020:128 [ref. 37637]). Current status: Valid as Paramonacanthus oblongus (Temminck & Schlegel 1850). Monacanthidae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Seychelles east to northern Australia, north to central Japan. Habitat: marine.
