eurystole, Stolephorus Swain [J.] & Meek [S. E.] 1884:35 [Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia v. 36; ref. 18867] Woods Hole, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Syntypes: USNM 19003 to 19017. Based on Stolephorus perfasciatus of Jordan & Gilbert 1883:273 [ref. 2476] and Swain 1883:55 [ref. 38302] (not perfasciatus of Poey 1860) on one specimen that was lost; but Swain & Meek list additional specimens [syntypes] as, "Specimens of this species, perhaps mixed with others, have been distributed by the U.S. National Museum under the following number, 19,003 to 19,017. •Valid as Engraulis eurystole (Swain & Meek 1884) -- (Nelson 1984:424 [ref. 5190], Robins & Ray 1986:75 [ref. 23100], Whitehead et al. 1988:317 [ref. 5725], Scott & Scott 1988:119 [ref. 25518], McAllister 1990:54 [ref. 14674], Cervigón 1991:121 [ref. 24472], Boschung 1992:44 [ref. 23239], Cervigón 1992:315 [ref. 23827], McEachran & Fechhelm 1998:358 [ref. 23897], Aguilera 1998:46 [ref. 24221], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2000:150 [ref. 27754], Menezes & Figueiredo in Menezes et al. 2003:40 [ref. 27192], Nizinski & Munroe 2003:789 [ref. 26995], García-Hernández et al. 2009:91 [ref. 37265], Page et al. 2013:67 [ref. 32708]). Current status: Valid as Engraulis eurystole (Swain & Meek 1884). Engraulidae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Maine (U.S.A.) south to Florida (U.S.A.); eastern Colombia to mouth of Amazon River (Brazil); including Gulf of Mexico and southern Caribbean Sea. IUCN (2015): Least concern. Habitat: marine.
