Bauchot 1963:134 [ref. 20718] attributes this species to Cuvier 1831 with holotype at RMNH, but Cuvier clearly cites Rüppell. •Synonym of Chaetodon melannotus Bloch & Schneider 1801 -- (Burgess 1978:673 [ref. 700], Allen 1980:158 [ref. 22764], Dor 1984:175 [ref. 29757], Golani & Fricke 2018:109 [ref. 36273]).
