No types known. Lectotype selected by Fricke 1999:409 [ref. 24106] as the specimen illustrated in Bennett's Pl. 16. •Synonym of Coris frerei Günther 1867 -- (Pethiyagoda et al. 1994:43 [ref. 21456], Heemstra in Smith & Heemstra 1995:xii [ref. 21953], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S114 [ref. 27377]). •Valid as Allocoris formosa (Bennett 1830) -- (Kuiter 2010:322 [ref. 35285]). •Valid as Coris formosa (Bennett 1830) -- (Randall 1986:692 [ref. 5706], Winterbottom et al. 1989:53 [ref. 13251], Fricke 1999:409 [ref. 24106], Parenti & Randall 2000:15 [ref. 24943], Fricke et al. 2018:281 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:124 [ref. 36273], Arndt & Fricke 2019:19 [ref. 36883], Zajonz et al. 2019:89 [ref. 36871], Randall & Victor 2022:193 [ref. 39916], Fricke et al. 2024:76 [ref. 41255]). Current status: Valid as Coris formosa (Bennett 1830). Labridae. Distribution: Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Socotra (Yemen), Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar and Mascarenes (La RĂ©union, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to western Indonesia. Habitat: marine.
