mangurus, Pimelodus Valenciennes [A.] 1835:Pl. 1 (figs. 4-6) [Voyage dans l'Amérique méridionale; ref. 20720] Río de la Plata, Argentina. Holotype (unique): MNHN A-8401. Valenciennes specimen: MNHN A-9417 (1, dry). Type catalog: Bertin & Estève 1950:55 [ref. 19575] with syntypes; technically the figured specimen is the holotype; Ferraris 2007:355 [ref. 29155]. Name available from plate, description in Valenciennes 1847:6 [ref. 5010], as Pimelodus manguru. See also Cuvier & Valenciennes 1840:156 [ref. 1008]. Pl. 1 was published in 1835. Figured specimen identified as MNHN A-8401 by Grant 1999:56 [ref. 24295], but he incorrectly named it the lectotype -- it is the holotype. •Valid as Zungaro mangurus (Valenciennes 1836) -- (Grant 1999:56 [ref. 24295]). •Synonym of Pseudopimelodus zungaro (Humboldt 1821), but a valid subspecies -- (Burgess 1989:276 [ref. 12860], López et al. 2003:60 [ref. 27366]). •Valid as Pseudopimelodus mangurus (Valenciennes 1835) -- (Shibatta in Reis et al. 2003:403 [ref. 27061], Ferraris 2007:355 [ref. 29155], Litz & Koerber 2014:20 [ref. 33622], Sarmiento et al. 2014:192 [ref. 35004], Mirande & Koerber 2015:33 [ref. 35117], Bertaco et al. 2016:421 [ref. 34561], Nión et al. 2016:32 [ref. 35565], Vera-Alcaraz et al. 2017:5 [ref. 35082], Koerber et al. 2017:51 [ref. 35267], Reis et al. 2020:470 [ref. 38364], Restrepo-Gómez et al. 2020:20 [ref. 37755], Grant 2021:210 [ref. 38702]). Current status: Valid as Pseudopimelodus mangurus (Valenciennes 1835). Pseudopimelodidae: Pseudopimelodinae. Distribution: South America: Uruguay, Paraná, Paraguay and La Plata River basins (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). Habitat: freshwater.
