Syntypes: MMNHS (75). •Synonym of Gobio kesslerii Dybowski 1862, but a valid subspecies as described -- (Economidis 1995:207 [ref. 23025] as kessleri, Bănărescu 1992:322 [ref. 40251] as kessleri, Bănărescu 1999:136, 151 [ref. 24846] as kessleri). •Valid as Gobio banarescui Dimovski & Grupche 1974 -- (Kottelat 1997:59 [ref. 22952]). •Synonym of Romanogobio elimeius (Kattoulas, Stephanidis & Economidis 1973) -- (Kottelat & Freyhof 2007:104 [ref. 29996]). •Valid as Romanogobio banarescui (Dimovski & Grupche 1974) -- (Geiger et al. 2014:Table S2 [ref. 37408], Friedrich et al. 2018:345 [ref. 35869], Arsovska et al. 2021:39 [ref. 38694]). Current status: Valid as Romanogobio banarescui (Dimovski & Grupche 1974). Gobionidae. Distribution: Southeastern Europe: Vardar (Axios) River drainage (Macedonia and Greece). Habitat: freshwater.
