Type catalog: Wheeler 1985:48 [ref. 20705]. Type information: Goode & Bean 1885:202 [ref. 1841]. Based on 'Blackfish' in manuscript description and 1 specimen sent by A. Garden [South Carolina]. •Synonym of Centropristis striata (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Parenti & Randall 2020:111 [ref. 37354]). Current status: Synonym of Centropristis striata (Linnaeus 1758). Serranidae. Centropristis is feminine, so correct is probably Centropristes melana when recognized. Mentioned as sometimes treated as a subspecies of striata by Heemstra et al. 2003:1334 [ref. 27060]. Original genus should have been Centropristis. •Synonym of Centropristis striata (Linnaeus 1758), but a valid subspecies -- (Bortone 1977:23 [ref. 7059]). •Synonym of Centropristis striata (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Heemstra et al. 2003:1334 [ref. 27060], Parenti & Randall 2020:111 [ref. 37354]). Type catalog: Paepke 1999:134-135 [ref. 24282] with a holotype.
