Paralectotypes: BMNH 1840.12.12.39 (1, stuffed) [not this species]. Lectotype selected by Ginsburg 1953:51 [ref. 1807]. Second syntype (paralectotype) is from the Indian Ocean and a different species (see Eschmeyer 1969:28 [ref. 1274], Fricke 1999:157 [ref. 24106]). •Valid as Pontinus nematophthalmus (Günther 1860) -- (Eschmeyer 1969:27 [ref. 1274], Robins & Ray 1986:273 [ref. 23100] as nematopthalmus, Cervigón 1992:421 [ref. 23827], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2000:156 [ref. 27754], Poss & Eschmeyer 2003:1248 [ref. 27048], Moura & Menezes in Menezes et al. 2003:72 [ref. 27192], Nelson et al. 2004:113 [ref. 27807], Page et al. 2013:116 [ref. 32708], Klautau et al. 2020:9 [ref. 37903], Robertson et al. 2020:161 [ref. 38098], Carvalho-Filho 2023:108 [ref. 40480] as nematophthallmus, Page et al. 2023:178 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Pontinus nematophthalmus (Günther 1860). Scorpaenidae: Scorpaeninae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Florida (U.S.A.) south to northeastern Brazil, including southern Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. IUCN (2015): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.

National Museum No. 2; ref. 1848] Off Yucatán, Mexico, 20°59'30"N, 86°23'45"W, Albatross station 235, depth 130 fathoms. Holotype (unique): USNM 39324. •Synonym of Pontinus nematophthalmus (Günther 1860) -- (Eschmeyer 1969:27 [ref. 1274], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2000:156 [ref. 27754]). Current status: Synonym of Pontinus nematophthalmus (Günther 1860). Scorpaenidae: Scorpaeninae. Habitat: marine.
