Holotype (unique): YPM 2098. Type catalog: Moore & Boardman 1991:8 [ref. 16741]. Spelled similis by Regan & Trewavas 1929:15 [ref. 3680]. Possibly a variant spelling or misspelling of similis (very closely related), treated by us as an indeclinable noun. •Valid as Astronesthes similus Parr 1927 -- (Gibbs 1964:331 [ref. 6960], Gibbs et al. 1984:11 [ref. 8225], McEachran & Fechhelm 1998:458 [ref. 23897], Harold 2003:895 [ref. 27001], Moore et al. 2003:185 [ref. 27076], Menezes et al. in Menezes et al. 2003:46 [ref. 27192], Parin & Borodulina 2003:594 [ref. 27333], Pinheiro et al. 2015:8 [ref. 34324], Carneiro et al. 2019:95 [ref. 37250], Eduardo et al. 2022:6 [ref. 39574], Villarins et al. 2022:34 [ref. 39442], Page et al. 2023:86 [ref. 40505]). Current status: Valid as Astronesthes similus Parr 1927. Stomiidae: Astronesthinae. Distribution: Atlantic, from 43°N to 27°S. Habitat: marine.
