Holotype (unique): SMNS 2250 (not found in 1995, probably lost). Type catalog: Fricke 1995:10 [ref. 28100], Fricke 2005:28 [ref. 29864]. Species later described in more detail in Steindachner 1879:12 [ref. 4228]. Type information: Whitehead 1970:16 [ref. 11605]. •Valid as Sardinops neopilchardus (Steindachner 1879) -- (Whitehead 1985:59 [ref. 5141], Paxton et al. 1989:157 [ref. 12442], Paulin et al. 1989:78 [ref. 24556], Kuiter 1993:34 [ref. 23929], Gomon et al. 1994:223 [ref. 22532], Kuiter 1997:32 [ref. 25488], Hutchins 2001:18 [ref. 25847]). •See Grove & Lavenberg 1997:190 [ref. 24023]. •Synonym of Sardinops sagax (Jenyns 1842), but a valid subspecies -- (Johnson 1999:722 [ref. 25471]). •Synonym of Sardinops sagax (Jenyns 1842) -- (Paxton et al. 2006:334 [ref. 28995], Gomon 2008:191 [ref. 30616]). Current status: Synonym of Sardinops sagax (Jenyns 1842). Alosidae. Distribution: Australia and New Zealand [if valid]. Habitat: marine.
