No types known. •Treated as synonym of Stegastes dorsopunicans (Poey "1863" [actual 1868]) -- (Allen 1991:253 [ref. 19344]) but Troschel's description apparently was earlier and should have been treated as valid. •Valid as Stegastes adustus (Troschel 1865) -- (Smith-Vaniz et al. 1999:286 [ref. 25013], Collette et al. 2003:114 [ref. 26784], Carter & Kaufman 2003:1696 [ref. 27102], Smith et al. 2003:41 [ref. 27621], Nelson et al. 2004:154 [ref. 27807], McEachran & Fechhelm 2005:498 [ref. 28815], Page et al. 2013:159 [ref. 32708], Smith-Vaniz & Jelks 2014:61 [ref. 33341], Robertson et al. 2016:146, 149 [ref. 34961], Robertson et al. 2020:161 [ref. 38098], Escobar-Sierra et al. 2021:81 [ref. 38844], Parenti 2021:81 [ref. 38418]). Current status: Valid as Stegastes adustus (Troschel 1865). Pomacentridae: Microspathodontinae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: southern Florida (U.S.A.), Bahamas, and Caribbean Sea.
