Distribution: Southeastern Indian Ocean, western and central Pacific, antitropical: Exmouth Gulf to Cape Leeuwin (Western Australia); Palawan (Philippines) and Taiwan north to southern Korea, central Japan and Ogasawara Islands; Hawaiian Islands. Southwestern Pacific populations belong to M. joyceae Whitrley 1931. Habitat: marine.
