Assumed to be based on Russell 1803 [ref. 12456]: Pl. 178, but this is not clear from translation (see Alfred 1961:84 [ref. 20553]). Lectotype selected by Fricke 1999:118 [ref. 24106] as the specimen figured in Russell's Pl. 178 (but no specimen is known). See Kottelat 1987:370 [ref. 5962]. Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-Pacific: Eastern Cape and Kwaulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes (Mauritius) east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) and Easter Island (Chile), north to Russia and Japan, south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia), New Caledonia and Kermadec Islands; eastern Pacific: southern California (U.S.A.) south to Peru, including southern Gulf of California (Mexico), Clipperton Island (France) and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). Habitat: marine.
