Holotype (unique): MNHN B-2165 (dry). Named varius on p. 224, variegatus on p. 157. First reviser not researched. Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: Aliwal Shoal (South Africa), East Africa, Persian Gulf, Socotra (Yemen), Seychelles, Aldabra (Seychelles), Comoros, Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) and Pitcairn Group, north to Ryukyu Islands (Japan), south to Lord Howe Island (Australia), New Caledonia, Kermadec Islands and Rapa (French Polynesia), straying to New Zealand. Habitat: marine.
